2009-2010 Winter Swim Team

The Newport Hills Swim and Tennis Club Winter Swim Team is a low-key, developmental team for swimmers ages five to eighteen. The Winter Swim Team practices from the end of September to May, and is a great way to stay in shape for summer league or to try competitive swimming for the first time! Swimmers learn the fundamentals of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, as well as starts, turns, and sportsmanship. Beginning swimmers practice with the novice swim team and progress to the advanced swim team with approval of the coach.

Practice Schedule

The advanced swim team practices from 4-5 pm, Monday through Thursday. The novice swim team practices from 5-5:30 pm on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday.

Swim practice maintains the normal schedule for all Monday Holiday's. No practice the Friday after Thanksgiving and during the Bellevue School District Winter, Mid-Winter, and Spring Breaks.

Practice Format

Advanced Swim Team
The advanced swim team participates in well-rounded, structured, hour-long workouts. These workouts begin with a warm-up, followed by a two main sets emphasizing stroke drills and endurance. Practice then concludes with work on starts and/or turns, and often a short team-building activity.

Novice Swim Team
The novice swim team is a transitional swim team for swimmers who have recently completed level seven of swim lessons. Novice swimmers participate in half-hour workouts emphasizing stroke, start, and turn development. Endurance is not a main focus on the novice swim team. Once novice swimmers have adequately developed all four strokes, they will move on to the advanced swim team at the coach's discretion.

Swim Meets
Winter swim meets are held on Sunday or Saturday mornings from 9 AM until Noon. We compete with MICC, Columbia Athletic Club, and Samena at these low key fun meets. Our first meet of the Season is the Pumpkin Splash meet held at the end of October. Time and Location will be available late September.

Attendance Policy

Swimmers are encouraged to attend swim team as often as possible, but daily attendance is not required. As an incentive to attend swim team, swimmers earn a treat for every 10 practices they attend. The team also earns a game day for every 300 practices attended. Stop by the front lobby to track your swimmer's progress!

Coaches

Mike Mullen will be coaching the winter team this year. About Mike: I grew up swimming in Texas on summer league programs similar to NHSTC until high school, when I joined a USS program. I swam in high school and college as a sprint freestyle specialist. I attended ASU, BYU, and the University of Utah, where I graduated with an Economics degree. I coached at a summer league team each summer during college, and fell in love with the atmosphere of kids and learning. I am an active swimmer and love to be in the pool. I am looking forward to making a positive contribution to the Newport Hills team this winter and getting you all ready for next summer. Go Sharks!
