Introducing Our Coaches

Our swim team coaches are employees of NHSTC. This year we have a head coach and four assistant coaches. They run the workouts, place the swimmers in the appropriate meets and races, and help with various other activities for the teams.

Mike Mullen (Head Coach): My name is Michael Mullen and I am joining the Sharks this year as an assistant coach; and I can't wait to get the summer rolling! I grew up swimming in Texas on summer league programs similar to NHSTC until high school, when I joined a USS program. I swam in high school and college as a sprint freestyle specialist. I attended ASU, BYU, and the University of Utah, where I graduated with an Economics degree. I coached at a summer league team each summer during college, and fell in love with the atmosphere of kids and learning. I am an active swimmer and love to be in the pool. I am looking forward to making a positive contribution to the Newport Hills team this summer and getting to know each of you. Go Sharks!

Kate Schafer (Assistant Coach): Hi Sharks! My name is Kate Schafer and I’m so excited for my third year of coaching at Newport Hills! I recently graduated from Northern Arizona University (Go Lumberjacks!) where I finished my degree in Health Science and my collegiate swim career as well. I started swimming at Newport Hills when I was nine and I couldn’t be happier coming back as a coach. I’ve been swimming competitively for 14 years as a distance freestyler with Bellevue Club, at Hazen High School, and at NAU. I can’t wait to help coach the Sharks and I’m looking forward to having another great summer!

Michael Patterson (Assistant Coach): My name is Michael Patterson and I am super excited for my second summer coaching with the sharks! I had an amazing time coaching last summer and was fortunate enough to be able to continue coaching during the winter, allowing me to improve my coaching techniques and my ability to identify which parts of a stroke kids need to improve. My goals for this summer season are to be more interactive with the kids and more technical with my instructions to them, but also to work with the swimmers when it comes to helping them identify what their goals for the season are and how they can best accomplish their goals. I'm looking forward to what I know will be another fantastic swim season and hope you guys are as excited as I am!

Maddie Hagen (Assistant Coach): Hi, my name is Maddie Hagen and I will be a new assistant coach for the summer swim team. This job has been a dream of mine since I was six years old, when I joined Newport Hills. My love of this team has grown over the years and I am super excited to spend another summer at NHSTC. My favorite stroke is backstroke and I also used to swim the 500 free. A recent graduate from Interlake high School, I will be attending Gonzaga University in the fall. I am a shark at heart and am looking forward to a fun summer!

Corrine Holden (Assistant Admin. Coach): My name is Corrine Holden. This will be my second year assisting the Sharks and I am so excited! I have been swimming for 12 years. I started swimming at Newport Hills when I was six. I swam for Newport High School for all four years. I graduated from Newport High School last year and I attended my first semester at BYU Idaho this year. I had so much fun last summer and I am looking forward to another fantastic season!
