Hello families! My name is Riley Thomas. I am a college student and I have been swimming since I was 4 years old. I swam competitively for Newport for about 5 years and also swam for my high-school team. I am a firm believer in that swimming is essential to learn at a young age to build survival skills, confidence, and prepare for things like swim team and other competitive water sports. I have experience teaching a variety of ages and abilities, ranging from kids who are just getting comfortable with the water to others who are in preparation to join swim team. I am so excited to help your child reach their goals in their swimming career and look forward to hearing from you!

Hey, my name is Shay! I have been teaching swim lessons at Newport Hills for a total of 5 years and coached swim team for 3 seasons. I swam for NHSTC for 9 years and am very passionate about the sport! I have experience teaching stroke technique and helping swimmers build overall confidence in the water. I love teaching all ages and levels; and I have experience with young children afraid of the water, competitive team swimmers, and adults. I go to school at Boise State University but will be home, in Newcastle, for the summer. I’m looking forward to working with our swimmers to help them improve their skills, reach their goals, and have fun doing it! I will be available to teach early May through early August.
Please text me if you’d like to book a lesson! |

Hi I’m Jada! I graduated from Newport High School and am attending Western Washington University. Growing up around the pool, I found my love for swimming and being in the water. As a competitive swimmer for over eight years, I enjoy sharing my experience to higher levels by teaching technique and the competitive aspect of the sport. I also love teaching younger swimmers who may be nervous of the water how to be safe and share the excitement of swimming! I have been teaching lessons for 3 years now and am also available to teach intro to synchronized swimming! With flexible availability, I look forward to continue teaching swimmers, both children and adults, to love the water as much as I do! (I am fully vaccinated.) I will be back starting June 8th.

Howdy! I’m Cole Shultz, and I’ve been involved with swimming since before I could walk. Growing up in the neighborhood has meant I’ve spent countless on the pool deck here at Newport Hills, and I started working as a group lesson instructor and lifeguard in the summer of 2018 and haven’t stopped helping kids in the water since. I even had the privilege of being able to coach our swim team last summer and will be doing so again this season too!
I also have experience with both competitive club swimming for King Aquatic Club and varsity high school swimming for our hometown Newport Knights, which has given me a unique insight into how the sport works and the best ways to improve your stroke. I will be available for private lessons starting May 16th and am excited to work with your child! |
Hi there! My name is Owen Gerking. I’ve been swimming competitively for 7 years and I am currently swimming for Olympic Cascade Aquatic club. I’m excited to start teaching private lessons to anyone who wants to improve technique and build endurance. I love working with all ages and anyone who shares a passion for swimming like I do! If you are interested in honing your swimming skills and improving your overall fitness, I’d love to work with you. The opportunity to coach Midlakes Water Polo this year is a blessing. I started doing Midlakes swimming when I was 7 which quickly turned into club swimming until I was 12.
During those Summers I was introduced to Midlakes polo and loved the sport. I started doing year-round Water Polo when I was 13 and am now traveling to the junior Olympics to compete with fellow coach, Alex Rowland. I hope to inspire a new generation of polo players for the neighborhood and have some fun along the way! |
Hello! My name is Emily Vukmir. I have taught swimming lessons for over 20 years. I loved teaching swimming so much that I became a Montessori teacher. The most important things for me as a teacher are being patient and making sure the skills are being correctly taught and explained. For the last 6 years I have been teaching at a Montessori Kindergarten in Beijing, China. While in Beijing I was also teaching private swim lessons. The most rewarding aspect of teaching swim lessons for me is when a child can swim a little bit or does something new and excitedly tells me “I did it.”

Hello! My name is Andrew and I am currently a student at the University of Washington Seattle. I've spent the past year here as a Coach for the NHSTC Swim Team. Swimming has always been a huge passion of mine and something that I hope to instill into younger swimmers. It's important for swimmers to build good habits and technique from a young age. This not only applies to swimming but later on in their lives as well. I enjoy working with children of all ages and helping them develop their skills. Please contact me for availability. Looking forward to hearing from you!
